3D for PS3 in June?
Firmware 3.20 to take console into three dimensions?
by Maritn Robinson, IGN UK

UK, March 10, 2010 - Sony's PlayStation 3 could be 3D ready as soon as this June, with reports suggesting a firmware update coinciding with the release of Sony's first 3D TV will enable the console to output in 3D.

PlayStation 3's capacity to support 3D gaming has already been touted with playable versions of Gran Turismo and Super Stardust on show at this year's CES. Now as Sony prepares to seriously enter the 3D space with the launch of its first 3D TV in Japan on June 10 it looks as if the PlayStation 3 will be following suit.

Leaked shots of Firmware 3.20 reveal it's to offer 3D Video Output, and now a report on AV Watch – translated by NeoGAF and picked up by vg247 – dates its release for this June, the same date as the release of Sony's 350,000 yen 46 inch 3D TV.

Sony declined to offer any comment on the story.

I'm pretty certain 3D TV's will be out for the summer anyway (in Britain) so they can capitalise on the World Cup.

Sony press conference update

GDC 10: Sony Announces Motion Controller Name
Is it the Gem? Is it the Arc? The Wand? Nope.
by Ryan Geddes

US, March 10, 2010 - At its press conference at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Sony officially announced the name of its new motion control system: Move.

In early discussions about the new motion-based input system, Sony had alternately referred to the system as the Arc, the Wand and Gem. Most recently, the company had reverted to simply calling the device the Sony Motion Controller.

"The Move is fast precise and accurate. From the tiniest twist to the strongest punch, you can express yourself. This is the next generation of motion gaming," said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and the PlayStation Network. "Nothing has been this precise."

The system uses the PlayStation Eye, the Move wand and the PS3 itself to register player movements and translate them into on-screen actions. Dille said Sony plans to launch the system this fall. A bundle will be available that includes the Move controller, the PlayStation Eye and an unnamed game. Head over to our Sony Press Conference Live Blog to follow Sony's announcements as they happen.

Updated: Sony also announced that an accessory called the Move Subcontroller will also be available for the system. It will allow you to play shooters like SOCOM 4 with two motion controllers. The main Move unit handles aiming and shooting, while the Subcontroller handles movement and other functionality. Sony showed a demo of SOCOM 4 in action, using the two-controller setup.

I saw this live on Gamespot, pretty much just a HD Wii. Nunchuck and the Move controller. It will cost $100 for the camera and the controller but they didn't mention the sub-controller.

It's exactly what everyone expected the Wii to be when they showed it off at E3 all those years ago.

All the reports on it I have read have said its easily the most accurate out of the 3 systems (wii, Natal and this) for motion capture onto the screen. I didnt understand the technical reasons, something to do with how its captured as it has not only the camera like natal but a point of reference to work from (the glowing light bit) with motion sensor enables better scaling. Or some shit like that.

On the other hand it not only is more expensive than natal, but it also has the downside of having to hold the wand thingy rather than being hands free.

Quote:
The Playstation 3 Arc is the most like Nintendo’s in terms of how it works. The motion controller, which looks like a wand with a glowing orb on top of it, transmits a signal to the Playstation Eye – Sony’s proprietary camera technology. What the eye receives in terms of motion will be displayed on the screen. From an accuracy perspective, the Arc is highly responsive, certainly more so than the Wii, and so much so that many feel the controller is twitchy.

Xbox 360 Natal is the greatest departure from Nintendo’s motion controller. Instead of using a controller to send motion instructions to the receiver, a high-sensing Microsoft camera, the Natal detects full body movement. So where the Wiimote and Playstation Arc require the swinging of their controls to mimic a tennis stroke, for example, with Natal your body is sufficient for this. The pixel-to-pixel accuracy is slack compared with the Arc, but the general flexibility is superior to both the Wii and Playstation motion technology. You will not use your Natal for video gaming only. A flick of the wrist could change a song in your Xbox media player, for example.

The bolded bit is the pro and the con really.

I have to say that Natal looks to be the far better to me.

Natal is certainly the most adventurous, so I hope they get the technology to work with our darker skinned brothers. It does seem to have the most potential.

I don't know if any of them will be getting my money after my Wii had a lifespan of about a week. I like controllers too much. Unless some gamechanging app comes out with one of them, they are just a gimmick.

I totally agree. I despise the motion aspect of the wii for "normal" games, it's just annoyingly inaccurate and tiring after any length of time, which is a major drawback. Even the tilt thing on the ps3 controller is annoying.

X-Box Live on Windows Phone 7 sounds like sh*t. Most likely because Windows Phone IS sh*t. But thems the breaks, I guess.
