Talk Wrestling Online Newsletter - Issue 46 (Columns: PPV Roundtable + The Final Cut)
================================================
Talk Wrestling Online Newsletter - Issue 46 - 25th January 2004 ================================================ Hey all, It's the Royal Rumble tonight live on PPV (Setanta Sports in the UK). I've ordered. Have you? Don't forget the PPV chat tonight, theres 5 WWE DVDs up for grabs. Usual doses of news and views, so enjoy. - Mitchell Jones TWO Newsletter Editor http://www.talkwrestlingonline.com/forum -------------------------------------------------------------------- Forum Focus -------------------------------------------------------------------- This weeks top subject was justifying Bob 'Hardcore' Holly as a main eventer challenging for Brock Lesnar's WWE championship at the Royal Rumble. "Loyalty bonus is all I can think of. He's been with the company for nearly 10 years. Of course, Goldust was there 8, and all he got was fired." - Chris2k. "NO JUSTIFICATION!!!!! How can a man that was once pinned by HEAD become a main Eventer!, and then a week later pinned by Pierre!." - The Brain. "I think the problem is that before he got injured he didn't even look remotely a threat and if I'm not mistaken was on Velocity a hell of a lot, then he comes back and all of a sudden everyone is meant to buy him being a main eventer." - The Crippler. "I honestly think that with the right booking, they could make Holly a re-born wrestler and draw." - Cactus Jack. What do YOU think? http://www.talkwrestlingonline.com/f...&threadid=9965 -------------------------------------------------------------------- New at Wrestling 101 -------------------------------------------------------------------- > TLW: WWE Royal Rumble 2004 Predictions http://www.wrestling101.com/101/article/TonyC/258/ > WWF Royal Rumble 92 Classic Review http://www.wrestling101.com/101/article/FTV/259/ > UK Scene #106 http://www.wrestling101.com/101/article/AdamS/260/ > TLW: Good Things In Small Packages http://www.wrestling101.com/101/article/TonyC/257/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- US News - By HSM -------------------------------------------------------------------- -WWE News- Vince McMahon has been encouraging Tazz to take a more heel approach to his commentary recently. Vince felt that he and Michael Cole were agreeing too much and that it was taking the edge off their commentary. He also felt the same about the RAW announce team, which is why he introduced The Coach to that team. WWE is currently considering moving Spike Dudley to Smackdown to compete as part of the cruiserweight division. WWE has stared sending more of its wrestlers down to OVW. Workers who are not currently on the house show circuit will be sent there for further training and also to help the developmental talent already there. On his first weekend back on the RAW roster Maven injured his elbow at a house show. He suffered a fracture and will miss 4 to 6 weeks of action. Vince McMahon this week ordered all wrestlers not to speak to wrestling reporters, as he is angry at news being leaked concerning WrestlemaniaXX. He also hinted that if he found out anyone was leaking information they would be fired. All signs continue to indicate that Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar will happen at WrestleMania XX, but that Goldberg will be gone after the show. The build to Brock/Goldberg could start at the Royal Rumble this Sunday. Staying on the subject of Goldberg, WWE management has told him to stop using the Jackhammer as his finisher and just stick with the Spear. WWE's thinking is that the Spear is over and that the Jackhammer is not needed. Goldberg has no plans to stop using the move despite management's wishes. He knows he will be gone from WWE soon and does not intend to change his persona for them. -NWA: TNA News- NWA: TNA is now moving forward on plans for their big three hour Sunday night PPV, but are now assuming that Hulk Hogan will not be involved. Most TNA officials feel that Hogan is heart set on working WrestleMania XX and, in the least, won't work TNA before that show. One theory also floating around is that Hogan used TNA to gain some leverage for his WrestleMania XX negotiations. Some within TNA fear that a Sunday PPV will hurt the weekly PPV's, making them seem inferior. Despite this, the promotion is moving forward with the PPV and could air the first one this summer. TNA continues to have talks with Kevin Nash about bringing Nash, as well as Scott Hall, in to work as a tag team. The plan right now if they do sign is to turn Jeff Jarrett face and have a program with Hall & Nash against Jarrett & Sting. Nash is asking for $7,500 a week to appear. Back when Hall was working TNA shows during the promotions first months, he was getting $7,500. Since then, TNA has drastically cut back on their salaries TNA officials have told Jerry Lynn that they likely won't be booking him anymore. Dutch Mantel has made it known in the creative meetings that he doesn't have a role for Lynn. Vince Russo looks to be back with TNA in a creative capacity. Word is that he and Jeff Jarrett have worked out their problems. Right now TNA is not planning to bring Russo back as an on-air personality. Russo may also be more of a consultant at this point, as some feel he won't be backstage at the PPV's each week. In results from this weeks PPV: *The Gathering beat Sandman & Balls Mahoney *Simon Diamond & Johnny Swinger beat Glen Gilbertti & David Young *D Lo Brown pinned Sonny Siaki *Micheal Shane & Shane Douglas beat Elix Skipper & Christopher Daniels *Redshirt Security beat Americas Most Wanted *Jeff Jarrett and El Leon went to a non-finish That's all for this week, see you next time -------------------------------------------------------------------- WWE Royal Rumble stuff... -------------------------------------------------------------------- >>> Have you entered your predictions yet? http://www.talkwrestlingonline.com/f...threadid=10023 >>> The Official Royal Rumble Discussion Thread: http://www.talkwrestlingonline.com/f...threadid=10076 >>> Royal Rumble Chat TONIGHT - Win WWE DVDs Join us TONIGHT for the Royal Rumble PPV Quiz & Chat The quiz will take place from 8pm-9pm (UK Time) and it will be the first one of the year - so it's the best time to enter! It's great having an insiders view and one who obviously knows his stuff! Thank you for reading. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Royal Rumble Roundtable 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------- It's the first PPV of 2004, hows it going to pan out? Simon and The Crippler take a look… ======================= World Title Last Man Standing Match Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels ======================= > Simon: I know WWE logic says HHH, but for me the sensible logic would be for Shawn Michaels to win this one. That's purely because I'd rather see HHH v Foley, not for a belt, and Shawn Michales v Rock for the Raw World Title. Considering though how they seem to be more interested in putting people like Rene Dupree in the Rumble... I doubt I'll get what I want. The match itself should be much better than the 'non-sanctioned' bullshit that went on at Summerslam 2002 which everyone flapped their gums about claiming it was brilliant. Granted the whole feud is basically the exact same story as the last time these 2 met, but it'll do. The whole problem for me instead is the idea of HBK having to job in this match, since HHH has bounced around for Michaels quite a lot recently, which I'm not so sure he would do so much if he wasn't getting a return job. I'm looking forward to the match but I expect to be disappointed if you know what I mean. I doubt it will be as good as their title match on Raw. Prediction: Triple H > The Crippler: This should be a good un. Like Simon says, its basically a rehash of the SummerSlam 2002 feud but it'll still be a good match. Triple H, whilst not being at the standard he was before, is still a good worker when hes not wrestling the likes of Nash, Steiner or Goldberg. Michaels is as good as ever, I'd expect a blade job from either or both men and Triple H to retain. Prediction: Triple H ======================= WWE Title Match Brock Lesnar vs. Bob Holly ======================= > Simon: Brock Lesnar must win this match. And anyone who says otherwise should be shot. Giving Holly the belt for shock value would be bullshit too. You heard me Russo. I've ranted about this several times and I know I'm not alone in being absolutely disgusted at this Smackdown title match. Bob Holly belongs as far away from the main event as possible. What a load of nonsense. As for the actual match itself, it'll be nothing special, so who really cares. Personally I'd love a squash match with Lesnar coming out on top, but it'll no doubt be either Lesnar cheating to win or Holly coming extremely close to winning. Jeez... this match... why? Prediction: Brock Lesnar > The Crippler: Memo to all WWE lower midcarders - get yourself into a TV match with the WWE Champion, have him badly injure you and when you return you are guaranteed main event status! Bob Holly should have 'Mid-Carder 4 Life' tattooed on his forehead. I expect a stiff as hell match and Brock HAS to go over. Prediction: Brock Lesnar ======================= World Tag Team Titles Tables Match Ric Flair & Batista vs. The Dudley Boyz ======================= > Simon: Zzzzzzzzzz. 4 years on, and the Dudleys are back where they started, only this time fighting for belts with far less credibility. Sticking the tag belts on Batista and Flair was ridiculous, at a time when the Raw tag division was attempting to get away from the whole stick 2 random guys together and hope they work as a team (ala Jindrak and Cade, the generic tag team of doom). Granted, at least the match has some decent background with the Dudleys being screwed in a reasonably original fashion, which is leading me to actually look forward to the match. Sure the Dudleys are reasonably stale at a TV level, but PPV they can always produce a half decent match, and I think they will here. Theres a lot of things to question about this match but it should still be good. Prediction: Ric Flair and Batista > The Crippler: I guess throwing the tables gimmick into the match will make this thing a bit more interesting. Putting the belts on the Dudleyz for the millionth time has absolutely no point to it so Flair and Batista SHOULD go over. Prediction: Flair and Batista ======================= WWE Cruiserweight Title Match Rey Mysterio vs. Jamie Noble ======================= > Simon: The only thing Smackdown has going for it right now is the Cruiserweight division and its giving us this match which should be great. Really looking forward to this match. Jamie Noble... you so evil! Nothing much to say about this one apart from hopefully it'll lead to something like a triple threat or fatal four way for the Cruiser title at Wrestlemania, since you know Tajiri is going to have to get involved again at some point in this feud. That's why I think Noble will win the title so as to prolong the feud. Prediction: Jamie Noble > The Crippler: Should be a good match. I was disappointed Tajiri dropped the title as I was liking it on him and didn't see the point in it going back to Mysterio. Noble is one of my favourite cruisers, more of a mat based guy to Mysterio's high flying stuff. Two interesting styles and it should be a great encounter. Prediction: Jamie Noble ======================= Eddie Guerrero vs. Chavo Guerrero ======================= > Simon: Finally Eddie can lose the baggage that is Chavo after this match. Don't get me wrong I like Chavo, but Eddie has something that Chavo doesn't, and being in the Los Guerreros tag team almost ruined the heat he had beforehand. Being round that horrible, horrible US belt didn't help either. Anyway, the build up has been great for this match and although I don't know the significance of Kurt's role in it exactly, its made it even better. The match should be a cracker. Don't mean to be a Russo but I personally would have stuck a gimmick on this match. No, it wouldn't involve tequila. Prediction: Eddie Guerrero > The Crippler: They should have had this feud over the US Title instead of it being on the Big Show who never defends the thing. If the rumours of a WWE Title shot next month for Eddie are true then surely he has to go over here, with Chavo moving into the Cruiserweight title hunt. Prediction: Eddie Guerrero ======================= 30 Man Royal Rumble ======================= > Simon: I'll start with why I'm saying Goldberg. I reckon that they will in the end go through with Lesnar v Goldberg at Wrestlemania... through Goldberg winning the Royal Rumble, and getting to decide who he challenges at Wrestlemania, the Raw or Smackdown champ. Then he'll choose Smackdown and we'll have HHH (who will probably still be champion) come out and say that Goldberg decided to go to Smackdown because he knew he couldn't beat him for the title or some other utter shite. Which is why I'm dissappointed Goldberg drew number 30. Not really sure I like the idea of number 30 winning. If its booked properly I suppose it might work. As for the Rumble match itself... its not looking as good as it should. Granted any of Randy Orton, John Cena, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit or Goldberg could go on to win the thing, thus making it slightly more unpredictable than usual... it just feels that there are indeed too many people picked up from Jabroni Drive and put into the match. Rene Dupree? Nunzio? Rico? Even the inclusion of bawbags like Matt Morgan can be quite irritating. However, as long as they keep to the fundamental rules for a good Rumble and not try some other nonsense like they did in 2002, it should be good. Letting the ring fill up a number of times, not rushing eliminations, lots of improvisation and not focusing on putting over every guy who's meant to be huge at the expense of the match. So I mean none of this crap where you'd see Kane come in and clear the ring, followed by Mark Henry's entry and clearing of the ring and then maybe someone like Kurt Angle clearing it too. I'm still looking forward to the Rumble anyway, as it surely can't be any worse than 2002. Isn't it funny to think back to how BAD that year really was? Overall, it's the Rumble... by default it will be very difficult to make this a crap event. Prediction: Goldberg > The Crippler: The Rumbles have become more predictable in recent years, normally its either 1 or 2 people who can win it. This year the likes of Goldberg, John Cena, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit and Kane all have realistic shots at it. I did think that Goldberg would win but with him entering at number 30 and being the "clear favourite", I am going to go with a man totally deserving of a bit of glory - Chris Benoit. Prediction: Chris Benoit ======================= Don't forget to post your predictions and join us for the PPV Chat tonight in the chatrooms! http://www.talkwrestlingonline.com/ppv-chat.php -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Final Cut: The Yearly Roster Cull - By Dean Saliba -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello and allow me to welcome you to another weekly edition of The Final Cut. The yearly roster cull is almost upon us as the majority of the mid-card looking nervously over their shoulders… Ultimo Dragon - I know what most people will say. Ultimo Dragon is a legend and he is capable of producing fantastic matches with the likes of Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, etc. But he is being completely wasted in the World Wrestling Entertainment right now and has been since his much publicised arrival. My advice to Ultimo Dragon would be to leave, walk away from the cruiserphobic World Wrestling Entertainment. Smaller promotions will allow you to wrestle how you wish to wrestle rather than watering you down. And of course there is the added bonus of the wrestling fans being able to see Ultimo Dragon at his best against wrestling talent like AJ Styles and Low-ki. Although I would love to finally see the cruiserweight division utilised to it's full potential, World Wrestling Entertainment is not going to change their views unless someone else steps onto the board and nudges Vince to the obvious conclusion that cruiserweight's are worth more than a small beat down segment on Smackdown every couple of months. Zach Gowen - Wow how many people still remember this guy? When Zach first broke onto the Smackdown show most of the fans were in awe of this malnourished one-legged guy doing a half decent moonsault and hopping around the ring. But sadly for him the novelty wore off faster than anyone expected it to and his act become lame and sour. (when you've seen one malnourished one-legged guy doing a half decent moonsault and hopping around the ring you have seen them all, right?) As the novelty of seeing this one-legged athletic was wearing off on the fans another problem was just beginning to grow. Zach started to grow a very big ego and he was not afraid of showing it. Working with Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and Vince McMahon has obviously gone to the boys head. I am as sensitive as the next guy but Zach, one leg or two legs, has no place with World Wrestling Entertainment. Maybe he can become a decent wrestler but with only one leg he is going to be nothing more than a freakshow. Billy Gunn - Ah good old Bill Gunn, the man that continues to stink up buildings all over the world. I am still wondering what Vince sees in this guy. Vince obviously thinks that he can make Billyboy a huge star, even though he has failed in his last 5,000 attempts with him. Billy's biggest success was as a part of The New Age Outlaws and even then he was mediocre. He has spent the last year or so struggling with several injuries to his shoulder. They have tried numerous ideas to get Billyboy over with the fans. They have gone from teaming him up with Road Dog, Chyna, Chuck Palumbo and even poor old Torrie Wilson was dragged into the pot. They also gave him title reigns to try and boost his status, all this still failed. Billy Gunn is a dead weight around the mid-card of World Wrestling Entertainment and needs to be got rid of to allow other talented stars to shine through instead of the human vacuum that is Billy Gunn. Mark Henry - Well he is big and he has been billed as the worlds strongest man thanks to winning a couple of competitions so he must be good, right? Well no. The problem with Mark Henry is that nobody cares about him at all. Putting him in dire angles with Mae Young has only resulted in lowering the interest in him. Someone had the bright idea of putting him with Teddy Long which has helped a little but the only heat he is getting is from the brilliant work of Teddy Long. Mark has been with the company since about 1998 (I think) and has made no impact what so ever. In fact ask any fan what his biggest contribution to World Wrestling Entertainment was and they will reply with the angle where he and Mae Young conceived a hand. That says it all. Hardcore Holly - I do not think that Hardcore Holly has ever had any kind of interest shown in him by the fans, anywhere, ever! Yet the writers still believe that he should be thrust into the main event picture over actual main event talent such as Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, John Cena, Big Show, amongst others. In fact I would go so far as to say that the entire Smackdown roster, the ring crew and even that weird nut who secretly stalks Michael Cole are more over and more talented than Hardcore Holly!! Gail Kim - When Gail Kim inked the deal to join World Wrestling Entertainment a number of her fans went around telling anybody and everybody who would listen that Gail was the lady who would turn the women's division into a main player for World Wrestling Entertainment. Let us fast forward to several months and a good collection of matches later. There is only two things that we know about Gail is that she injures people in nearly every match she enters and that she is not as ready for a large promotion never mind a global promotion like World Wrestling Entertainment as her fans would have you believe. There are female wrestlers out there such as Shannon Ward and Nikita who are actually very talented as well as attractive - Take note World Wrestling Entertainment! Earnest Miller - "Somebody call my momma!" I wish someone would call Vince and ask him what in the hell he was thinking by hiring Earnest Miller. Sure he was mildly entertaining as a commissioner type role in World Championship Wrestling, but times have changed and his style and little talent has not. And while I am on the subject. Who told Earnest Miller that he was a good commentator? Because whoever it was should be shot or whipped by Rico! Get rid of him and fast! Rikishi - He was once a well known wrestler, gaining a nice segment of television time and was well over with the fans. When the nice storyline concerning him running over Steve Austin came along things were looking up for the Phat man. Sadly that storyline did not last very long and Rikishi was reduced to dancing in the rings on second rate shows and fighting jobbers. Now things seemed to have slumped even further with him being reduced to small matches with Scotty Too Hotty once or twice a month or so on Smackdown. Rikishi does not seem to be able to do anything else apart from dance and put out a decent looking superkick. Scott Steiner - When it was first announced that Scott Steiner was coming to the World Wrestling Entertainment they brought him in with so much fanfare that it looked like no expense had been spared. Alas when Scott Steiner finally wrestled it become abundantly clear to most of us with vision and hearing still intact that Scott Steiner more or less sucked inside the wrestling ring. Couple that with the fact his promos seem to be conducted in some kind of inaudible language, plus he was shifted down to the mid-card rather quickly. It looks like World Wrestling Entertainment have wasted a bucket-load of money on him. When many people consider Scott Steiner's greatest contribution to be slipping off the apron whilst attempting to throw a punch at Test, then I would say it was time to call it a day. A-Train - No matter how many times they continue trying, this guy is NEVER going to get over with the fans. I like A-Train, but he should be making a name for himself on the smaller independent scene and not stinking up the World Wrestling Entertainment. And no amount of great matches being dragged out of him by Chris Benoit will change my mind on this subject. According to various "reporters" A-Train is on a higher wage than most of the talent in his boat. I thought I could handle A-Train when he had all that fur over his body but the last straw came when some bright spark put him in trunks. They should fire that genius as well! There are obviously more people that we could see banished from World Wrestling Entertainment but this is depressing me. Until next time....
