I had played WrestleMania 2000 on N64, and thought that was the best wrestling game ever. Then, I played this, and my mind changed completely.
The graphics were better, the game faster, and the roster more updated. Even though I didn't play this as much as WM2000, I still preferred it.
My favourite part of the game was definitely the Pre-Season mode, and quite why THQ decided to take this feature out of later games is beyond me. I loved telling HHH where to shove his praise :D
However, the downfall of the game was the unrealistic 'down-time'. Hit someone with a cinder block, and they'd pop straight up and attack you, the same with many finishing moves. This angered me quite a bit, especially as THQ made no attempt to change this in later games.
This gets a 4 out of 5 from me, based on how good it was then.

Yes compared to Shut your mouth, Smackdown 1 seems out of date but it still is a lot of fun and has features that are quite good but seem not to have made it into the later versions of smack down ie pre season mode, winning a belt in exhibition and still having that belt in the season mode.
the game play is good and to be able to make choices back stage in pre season mode that makes a difference to the way people react to you in the season mode is a concept they should bring back. they also should bring back the feature that allowed yu to create your own P.P.V.
I love this game. I don't care what anyone says. It was fantastic. So simple and great graphics too. Minor flaws here and there, but the season mode was a damn good one, and I throughly enjoyed playing this game.

WWF Smackdown was a excellent game for wrestling fans when it debuted in mid 2000, and to this day it is likely you will still get some satisfaction out of it. There is a roster of 30+ superstars, including big names like The Rock, Steve Austin, The Undertaker and Kane, Tag Teams like Edge and Christian and The Dudley Boyz, and even some of the divas, like Debra and Tori. All the superstars have unique attires and graphical detail, and the body shapes are almost perfect replicas of the ones we see on TV. The superstars even come out to the ring with their respective TitanTron and theme. The game is presented very well.
The gameplay, although a tad unrealistic, is very fast paced and exciting to play, and it is also relatively easy to pick up. Sadly, the unrealistic factor really hurts the game at times, as if you smash your opponents skull with a steel chair, or clock them with a Sledgehammer they will be back up before you know it. Each wrestler has their own Finishing Move, so The Rock Bottom, Pedigree and Chokeslam are all to be found. Different match options include Steel Cage, Hardcore and I Quit, and you can even create your own superstar with the CAW mode.
If thats not enough there is the interactive Season and Pre-Season mode, where you take your chosen superstar through a WWE season, where storylines and feuds are created, and there are a selection of items to unlock along the way. The Create a PPV mode was one of my favourite game options, and I fail to see why they have take it out of Smackdown 3 and 4. It allows you to create your own PPV, with different match options, and at the end you get a rating to see how well you produced a PPV.
Overall, although very outdated in to this day, it is still an adequate game, and at the time it came out it was an absolute pleasure to play. I'd give the game 4/5.
